সম্পূর্ণ মামলার বিবরণBetween April and May 1971, a pattern of enforced disappearances was documented across three sub-districts of Sylhet — Sylhet Sadar, Bishwanath, and Golapganj. In each case, men — predominantly between the ages of 18 and 55 — were taken from their homes, workplaces, or from public markets, usually by uniformed Pakistani soldiers accompanied by local informants.
In most cases, families were given no explanation and no receipt. They were told only that the men were being "taken for questioning." None of the 47 documented individuals ever returned.
In several instances, bodies were later discovered in the Surma River or in fields on the outskirts of town. In other cases, no remains were ever found.
The use of local informants — individuals who identified targets for Pakistani forces — is a recurring feature of these disappearances. In at least twelve documented cases, witnesses identified specific individuals who acted as informants, providing names and locations of men to be taken.
This case remains classified as documented rather than verified because forensic confirmation of the fate of all 47 individuals has not been achieved. Investigation is ongoing.

My husband left for the market on the morning of 14 April. It was just an ordinary morning. He had a list — rice, oil, some things for the house. He kissed our children before he left.
He never came back.
In the afternoon, a neighbour came to tell me that men were being taken from the market. Pakistani soldiers with a list — someone had given them a list of names. My husband's name was on it.
I went to the cantonment three times to ask about him. Each time I was turned away. The third time, a soldier told me to stop coming or I would be taken too.
I waited for two years before I accepted that he was not coming back. My children grew up without their father. I have never found out where he is buried, or if he was buried at all.
I am telling this story now because I am an old woman and I will not be here much longer. I want it to be written down. I want someone to know what happened to him.
